HE was at the heart of Swinging London in the 1960s and still loves a party.

But with a broken ankle slowing him down, 85-year-old Michael Caine needed a little help to get around town this week.

The Oscar-winning actor used a walking frame and was assisted by two people as he hobbled into Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 70th birthday bash in London on Thursday night.

Sir Michael, who was seen using a wheelchair last week, was injured when he slipped on ice in his garden earlier this month.

Despite appearing frail, with a black cast on his foot and his toes exposed, a source close to the actor said he was ‘in fine health and great spirits’ at Lord Lloyd-Webber’s party.

Other guests included Sir Elton John – who is 71 tomorrow – and his 55-year-old husband David Furnish. Sir Michael celebrated his own 85th birthday just ten days ago and recently attended the screening of his documentary My Generation, about London in the Swinging Sixties. He was joined at the screening by Sir Paul McCartney who pushed the actor in his wheelchair.

Earlier this month Sir Michael, who has starred in more than 167 movies including Zulu and Alfie, hinted that he may retire from acting soon.

‘I’ve always said that you don’t retire from movies, movies retire you,’ he said. ‘ They haven’t retired me just yet. I feel it’s coming.

‘I’m 85 and getting up at 6.30am and learning six pages of dialogue... well, it’s not my idea of paradise.’

A few years ago as he approached his 80th birthday he revealed: ‘ I don’t feel very old, but I never look in a mirror so I always think I’m about 38.’
