What law says on children driving

-

You need to be at least 17 and have a full or provisional driving licence to drive on public roads

On private land, rules are more relaxed. If you have permission from the land owner, you can drive any vehicle on it regardless of age

No legal papers are required and the vehicle doesn’t need an MoT

However, the vehicle won’t be insured – and if an accident happens, there will be no payout

If the car strays on to public roads, even a small grass verge, then all the usual rules come into force

Teens can apply for a provisional licence at 15 years and nine months as mopeds can be ridden from 16
