Bambi’s adorable ... to eat!
JAMIE OLIVER and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall are raving about goat as the new fashionable meat. But if you want something infinitely more delicious, try muntjac.
A native of South-East Asia, the muntjac was first introduced to Britain in 1900 by the Duke of Bedfordshire as a curiosity; but numbers soon spiralled out of control.
By 2010 this adorable-looking creature had been nicknamed ‘Asbo Bambi’ because of its voracious appetite for devouring woodland plants, destroying vital bird habitats and breeding like rabbits.
Thus I have no hesitation in recommending their meat — a cross between lamb and venison, sweeter and more tender than the latter but not as fatty as the former. Plentiful, free-range, organic, cruelty-free and wholly unfashionable: what more could you want?
