How infection can strike
DOGS can carry up to seven types of bacteria, studies show. Infections on paws can include salmonella and campylobacter, from treading in other animals’ faeces, research by Pittsburgh University in 2013 found.
The skins of dogs and cats can harbour superbug staphylococcus, otherwise known as MRSA, along with
streptococcus, which causes meningitis in humans.
Other bacteria can include pasteurella, which can be spread by licking or bites. Harmless to pets, it can trigger infections in humans.
Dog saliva can also contain organisms of faecal origin, as well as bacteria that can cause stomach upsets, as well as worms and parasites.
