Juncker in row over pal’s job
JEAN-CLAUDE Juncker has been ordered to re-run the shadowy process which led to his notorious chief of staff appointed as the EU’s top bureaucrat.
The European Commission chief (pictured) allegedly parachuted Martin Selmayr, who he calls ‘the monster’, into the job.
A report by a committee of MEPs said the appointment as the EU executive’s secretarygeneral, which took only minutes at a meeting, was like a coup which potentially ‘overstretched the limits of the law’.
Mr Selmayr, 7, a German lawyer, is known for his aggressive approach and his sudden appointment in February led to the inquiry.
On Monday, the committee passed a resolution questioning the transparency of his appointment and said the application should be reopened to more candidates.
Brussels spin doctors insisted that rules were followed ‘religiously’. The resolution will be voted on by all MEPs today.
