Gerrard in talks to be new boss of Rangers

- By DOMINIC KING

STEVEN GERRARD is considering an offer from Glasgow Rangers to start his career as a manager in Scotland. Rangers owner Dave King wants the Liverpool legend to become the permanent successor to Pedro Caixinha, who was sacked in October. King sent a delegation, headed by director of football Mark Allen, to meet Gerrard last week. Gerrard, 37, is in charge of Liverpool’s Under 18s, but the idea of working at a club with the stature of Rangers is something that appeals to him. He has had opportunities to manage but Gerrard believed it was important to work at development level first. ‘I think this was the sensible route,’ he said recently. ‘I had options to go into the Premier League and offers to lead in other leagues, but this was definitely the sensible and the best decision to take in terms of where I want to be in the long run.’ Before making a decision Gerrard wants to know about the structure at Rangers, given the problems they have endured. But should he take the job — and Rangers are confident — he will appoint Gary McAllister as his No 2.
