IT’S LIKE FLOGGING THE CROWN JEWELS

- PETER REID FORMER ENGLAND MIDFIELDER

There are some things this country should never sell, like the Crown Jewels — and Wembley is english football’s crown jewel. even at £950million, it smacks of being a poor decision in the business AND sporting sense. If Shahid Khan can sense there is money to be made from Wembley, why can’t the great minds at the FA realise the financial opportunity themselves? It can’t be difficult without selling Wembley lock, stock and barrel. This place is iconic to every working man, football fan and aspiring player. I count myself very lucky to have played at the old Wembley. I couldn’t have been prouder making the famous walk in 1984 with everton. To realise the experience again playing for england against romania a year later was the stuff dreams are made of. The stadium may be new now but its iconic status remains. It’s the home of football everyone around the world recognises and dreams of playing at. I don’t often agree with Ken Bates but when he says the FA are custodians and trustees of Wembley, he’s absolutely right. The country trusts the FA to look after the home of football. how can they sell it? english football without Wembley is like gin without tonic or tea without milk. It’s just not right.
