Rory over Masters misery

- By DEREK LAWRENSON

iN THe seven days that followed his shocking final-round collapse at the Masters, rory Mcilroy binge-watched Tv programmes, Billions among them, read books on how to achieve success, such as The Chimp

Paradox, and found himself staring into the distance as he relived the shots that let him down. it was then that his wife erica decided to intervene. ‘it’s time we left the house and got back into our routine,’ she told him. Another fortnight on, and Mcilroy looked and sounded more like his usual cheery self as he contemplated his return to the fold at the Wells Fargo Classic in North Carolina today on a Quail Hollow course where he has won twice in the past. ‘it’s a course where you have to stand up and hit the shots if you’re going to do well,’ he said. Mcilroy admitted that he put himself under too much pressure on that fateful Sunday at Augusta, as he looked to seal the deal on a career Grand Slam, but vowed to learn from the experience. ‘The day you become frightened of failing is when you stop having the chance to succeed,’ he said. ‘What happened at the Masters on the final day didn’t sit well with me for about a week but it’s in the past. i’m just excited about the events i’ve got coming up, including the other three majors.’ Also competing for the first time since the Masters is Tiger Woods, who is experimenting with a new set of prototype irons carrying his initials after he struggled with his previous set at Augusta. They seemed to work in the pro-am yesterday, as he breezed round in an approximate score of 67.
