HAILEY TUCK: Junk (Sony)

-

THE American singer cut her teeth in Parisian jazz bars, but also looks to pop and blues on this covers-heavy debut. Solomon Burke’s Cry To Me and Denny Laine’s breezy Say You Don’t Mind get deft makeovers, and Pulp’s Underwear is a surprising inclusion. Leonard Cohen’s That Don’t Make It Junk sounds too slight, but Tuck’s voice is distinctive and her song selection excellent.
