Moyes gets the job done but now it’s decision time for West Ham

-

David Gold: Congratulations! David Moyes: Thank you, well done, chairman, good, thank you. Have you seen the boys? Gold: Seen the boys and congratulations. Mark’s wonder goal. I’ve told him, keep practising that and do that again. He’s got to work harder! Moyes: I think you’re right chairman, catch you later. Gold: Catch you later.

This exchange in the tunnel between manager a co- owner confirms this was one of the better days to be at West ham.

Opinions on Moyes, certainly outside of the club, change at the drop of a hat. One day, he is considered an ideal, no-nonsense manager for West ham. The next day, sackable.

The bottom line, though, is thanks to this 2-0 win over Leicester which included a volleyed screamer from Mark Noble, they are no longer in a relegation fight. Moyes has completed the job asked of him when appointed in November.

And yet, the conflict will continue. Moyes’s win rate is nothing special so once again we’re asking, should he stay or should he go? The board think the scot should stay because his survival blueprint has worked and a two-year contract could be offered. The fans, however, are not so sure.

spend some time in the company of Moyes and you get the sense he too does not know whether this is the right fit.

After this victory over a lacklustre Leicester, co- owner David Gold was seen searching for his manager in the King Power stadium corridors. Finally, he found him. A big hug was followed by Gold telling Moyes: ‘Congratulations! Mark’s wonder goal! i’ve told him, keep practising that and do that again. he’s got to work harder.’

Moyes responded politely and they parted ways, before he discussed why whoever is in charge next season has a ‘big project’ on their hands. he did not seem to suggest it was for him.

‘it’s incredibly tough to be a manager now,’ Moyes said. ‘You can see the reaction of the supporters when you win — everything is right. But when you lose it is very difficult.’

Leicester can be a lesson for West ham. Nine years ago, they were in League One, yet they were booed off after this loss. since winning the title in 2016, Foxes fans expect a higher finish than ninth in the table.

With the job done, both West ham and Moyes now have a big decision to make. The debate will continue over whether he is the man to take them forward.
