Shakhtar boss Fonseca flies in for talks at West Ham

- By MATT LAWTON

WEST HAM have wasted no time in searching for a replacement for David Moyes after meeting Shakhtar Donetsk manager Paulo Fonseca yesterday. The 45-year-old Portuguese flew into Luton yesterday afternoon with his agent, Jorge Mendes, and was taken by car to the Essex mansion of Hammers chairman David Sullivan.

Sportsmail’s exclusive picture shows a car leaving Sullivan’s home at 6.35pm last night after a 75-minute meeting. The picture appears to show Fonseca’s lawyer covering his face, sitting in the front. Mendes and Fonseca himself were sat in the back. As Sportsmail revealed last weekend, Moyes was almost certainly taking his last game in charge of the London club when he guided them to victory against Everton on Sunday. His contract expired on Sunday night and although he is due to receive a seven-figure bonus for keeping the club in the Premier League, it has become clear over the last few weeks that a lack of commitment from both sides was likely to lead to a parting of the ways. But yesterday’s meeting, set up when Moyes was still manager, proves that Sullivan is certainly interested in making another managerial change, with Fonseca the first through the door for talks. Also on a shortlist of candidates for the West Ham job is former Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini but Fonseca perhaps has the advantage of being a younger coach with a growing reputation. He took charge of Shakhtar Donetsk two years ago in what was his first overseas job and won the title in Ukraine in his opening two seasons, completing a league and cup double in that first campaign. But he perhaps made more of a name for himself by reaching the last 16 of the Champions League earlier this season — after securing second spot in the group thanks to a 2-1 home win against Manchester City.
