Everyone's painted their faces,' said the Queen

-

WE ASKED deaf actor Terry Ruane, an expert lip reader from South London, to watch the wedding on TV. These are the unrecorded comments made by the royals…

PRINCE Charles, speaking to Diana as they left Buckingham Palace for Westminster Abbey in an open landau, said: ‘It’s a bigger crowd today than I expected.’ Arriving at the Abbey the Queen turned to Prince Philip and said: ‘ Everybody’s painted their faces!’ Then she added: ‘Well, it’s patriotic.’

Sarah Ferguson emerged from Clarence House with her father Major Ronnie Ferguson in the glass coach, waving to the crowd. She said: ‘It’s magnificent.’

Starting down the aisle Sarah turned to her father and joked: ‘Do you know the way?’ Her father nodded to the carpet and said: ‘I’m following the blue.’ Her father said: ‘Is this what you expected?’ Sarah answered, showing just a touch of nerves: ‘oh it’s fine.’

After signing the register the newlyweds emerged down the steps towards the Queen. Sarah exclaimed: ‘Wonderful.’ She curtsied to the Queen and, turning to Andrew, said: ‘My train’s not laid properly,’ but she hid the worry with a smile.

An anxious Duke of York asked: ‘Is it too much?’ Sarah assured him: ‘no, I’m oK.’

The couple proceeded towards the door acknowledging guests. The Duke of York remarked: ‘So many people around here.’ Sarah agreed: ‘Yes, I know.’

once in the coach for the return journey to the Palace, Sarah flinched as something disappeared down the front of her dress. Prince Andrew leaned across to ask: ‘What was that?’ Sarah said: ‘Just confetti.’

As they arrived at the Palace steps Sarah asked all her bridesmaids and page boys: ‘Did you like it?’ She was answered with enthusiastic hugs and kisses.

The scene on the balcony was met with a roar from the crowd demanding a royal kiss. The new Princess pretended to be puzzled, mouthing ‘What? I can’t hear’, to the crowd. Then Prince Andrew took the lead and planted a huge kiss on her.

The Queen remarked to her mother: ‘It’s nice to see all these people here, Mummy.’ As the newlyweds were left on the balcony Sarah said: ‘Hold my hand, Andrew.’ Her request was quickly granted.
