Twilight Kristen goes barefoot at Cannes
KICKING off her stilettos – and kicking up a fuss – actress Kristen Stewart flouts the rules of the red carpet.
The Twilight star ditched her Christian Louboutins at Cannes Film Festival to rebel against its strict heels-only policy, arguing that the rule was sexist.
In front of a sea of photographers, the 28year-old quickly slipped out of her heels and jogged up the red staircase barefoot at the black-tie premiere of director Spike Lee’s movie BlacKkKlansmen on Monday.
The Cannes dress code is notoriously strict, with a group of women denied entry in 2015 for not wearing high heels. Officials said it was ‘obligatory for all women to wear high-heels for red carpet screenings’.
But Miss Stewart, who is serving as a member of the Cannes jury this year, said: ‘Things have got to change immediately.
‘It has become really obvious – if a man and I
were walking the red carpet together and someone stopped me and said, “Excuse me, young lady, you’re not wearing heels. You cannot come in”, then I’m going to say, “Neither is my friend, does he have to wear heels?” ’
The American actress, who wore a silver mini dress and had her hair slicked back, added: ‘You simply cannot ask me to do something that you are not asking him.
‘I get the black-tie thing but you should be able to do either version – flats or heels. If you’re not asking guys to wear heels and a dress, you cannot ask me either.’
It is understood that Miss Stewart has not been punished for ignoring the rule.
In 2016 Oscar-winner Julia Roberts was pictured arriving barefoot for the Cannes premiere of the film Money Monster.
