Debt recovery bungle at EDF
HUNDREDS of households are being hounded for money they do not owe by EDF Energy.
The power giant had sold debt belonging to several thousand energy accounts to debt recovery agency Lowell. But many of these accounts were held as ‘occupier only’ which meant that EDF Energy was only aware that the resident of the property was one of its customers, but not who they were.
Lowell used a range of records to identify the account holders who lived at the property at the time the account was open, but got it wrong in hundreds of cases.
EDF Energy said it has received 900 complaints about the issue to date but expects that many more are affected. The energy supplier has apologised for the inconvenience and ‘undue stress’ caused.
Customers who have already contacted the energy giant will receive a letter in the next few days outlining what will happen next, and if compensation is due.
Anyone who is concerned should contact Lowell on 0333 556 5770.
