Now Nicola brands Brexiteers ‘mad’

- By Daniel Martin Policy Editor

NICOLA Sturgeon described senior Tory Brexiteers as ‘mad’ yesterday after briefing the EU’s chief negotiator about her vision for Scotland.

The Scottish First Minister claimed Theresa May was only listening to ardent Eurosceptics such as Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and Jacob Rees-Mogg, who all want to pull out of the customs union and the single market.

But she predicted that ‘sooner or later’ the Prime Minister would have to concede that the UK must remain in a customs union.

After a meeting with Michel Barnier in Brussels, she said: ‘They are not listening to anybody but the mad Brexiteers – people like Boris Johnson, Jacob Rees-Mogg and Michael Gove, that’s the problem, even though these people are not speaking for the majority in terms of hard Brexit.’

Miss Sturgeon added: ‘I was very clear with Michel Barnier that I wanted to see the UK as a whole remaining within the single market. In my very, very strong view it is in the interest of the whole UK to stay in the customs union.

She said the Government ‘would be cutting off their nose to spite their face if they turned their back on that’.

The First Minister also insisted that Scotland would not join the euro if it ever became independent, but would keep the pound.
