‘Impartial’ Bercow shows true colours (again)
JOHN Bercow was facing further accusations over his supposed impartiality last night after a second anti-Brexit sticker was spotted on his car.
In March the Commons Speaker faced an angry backlash when it was revealed his car was bearing a sticker declaring: ‘B******s to Brexit’.
And yesterday it emerged that Mr Bercow’s Land Rover Freelander carries a second sticker bearing the message: ‘Don’t blame me, I voted Remain.’
The bumper sticker copies the design of the EU flag, with a circle of yellow stars surrounding the message on a blue background. It is available from the website I Heart EU for £2.99. The revelation will raise fresh questions about Mr Bercow’s impartiality when chairing crucial debates in the Commons on Brexit in the coming months.
He will have a critical role in deciding on which amendments to Brexit legislation are debated by MPs and which ones are ruled out of order.
Tory MP Andrew Bridgen described the latest sticker as ‘an insult to the 17.4million people who voted for Brexit’, and called on Mr Bercow to resign.
Mr Bridgen added: ‘All pretence of political impartiality has disappeared, and so it is time for John Bercow to disappear. It is time for a new Speaker.’
In 2017, Mr Bercow revealed to a group of students that he had voted Remain, but insisted it did not affect his impartiality.
The row comes as the Speaker faces intense pressure to allow an investigation into claims that he bullied Commons staff.
Mr Bercow is also facing calls to honour the promise he made when taking up the role in 2009 that he would step down this month.
