Students want sanitary bins... in men’s toilets
SANITARY bins could be put in the men’s toilets at a university so students who say they are gender neutral can use the loo ‘they feel most comfortable with’.
A motion to introduce the bins across Student Union buildings at Newcastle University was unanimously approved, with student officers also now demanding that the university also bring in bins in male toilets within its own buildings.
Union president Ronnie Reid said: ‘On one side it is for students who identify with a range of genders. On the other it is also for students who may have a medical condition, so the bins are not just for menstrual care products.’
The bins were approved following a motion by Hannah Fitzpatrick, the Newcastle student union’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans officer.
A university spokesman said: ‘We will discuss the motion for menstrual care bins in all washrooms. There is a number of gender-neutral accessible toilets around campus, and care bins are provided within gender-neutral and single toilet units.’
