Murray’s on course for grass season, says upbeat Judy

- MIKE DICKSON

JUDY Murray has revealed that her son Andy has returned to practising on the court and hinted that he may attempt to play during the forthcoming grasscourt season. The double Wimbledon champion, who has kept a low profile for a month, is down to play the grasscourt Libema Open in Rosmalen, Holland next week. ‘He’s doing the rehabilitation. He’s been back on the court in the last couple of days,’ Judy told BBC Sport. ‘He is not a stranger to rehabilitation and this one has taken longer than anyone probably expected and certainly longer than he would have liked. It has been incredibly frustrating for him and his team. ‘Fortunately he is very resilient, always working really hard. He knows what he still wants to achieve in the game. He is getting closer to where he wants to be and you will all hear from him in the next couple of days. His goal was always to try to be ready for the grasscourt season and that is still his goal.’ But she did strike a note of caution about the return of a player whose success has been built on meticulous preparation, and a ‘couple of days’ back on court hardly seems ideal. All seemed to be going well with his recovery efforts from January’s operation and he was back on the court in late March, but some form of setback ensued in late April and Murray took a step back from his training. ‘Any player who has been out injured, it takes you a bit of time to get back to top form,’ said Judy. ‘You need matches to build up your match fitness. You are not going to come back and start where you left off. He is the only person who knows how he feels.’
