My Coronation Day high-point

-

ON COrONATION Day, I flew a Meteor 8 jet fighter in a formation of 168 aircraft in the flypast over Buckingham Palace as the royal Family watched from the balcony.

I was 22 and probably the youngest pilot in the formation.

I married my wife Margaret on June 20 that year, so we have two 65th anniversaries to celebrate. Flt Lt (rtd) roGer WILKINS, Chalfont St Peter, Bucks. MY FUTUre husband howard, 20, marched in the Coronation procession. he was doing his National Service in the rAF and was chosen because he was 6ft 2in.

There were six weeks of practice. They marched 16 miles on the day and found it emotional and exhilarating — soaked to the skin by rain, but proud to be British. I was a 12year- old schoolgirl watching the day’s events from the top of Liberty, the department store.

Winston Churchill’s carriage broke down in the street outside. MArY NUNAN, Crowborough, e. Sussex.
