What a humiliation! Cricketers lose to Scotland
AS the top-ranked nation in One Day International cricket, England losing to the team ranked second-bottom in the world would always be embarrassing.
But their humiliation was made all the worse because the conquerors of England’s superstars were the Auld Enemy – cricketing minnows Scotland.
In a shocking six-run victory, Scotland pulled off a historic first against the team which has finished as runners-up in three Cricket World Cups.
Callum MacLeod’s scintillating 140 not out with the bat took the home side to 371- 5. Despite a century from Jonny Bairstow, England were all out for 365.
It sparked scenes of jubilation at Edinburgh’s Grange ground, which has a capacity of just 3,000, and a small pitch invasion.
Fans also swarmed to social media to mock England. Craig Van Dam wrote on Twitter: ‘That’s embarrassing. Genuinely never met a Scottish person who likes cricket, never mind plays it.’
England captain Eoin Morgan admitted: ‘It was a fantastic game of cricket. Scotland played extremely well. They brought their best game and we didn’t.’
Delighted Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer said: ‘It means a lot to the guys. We’ve created an electric atmosphere. It was an outstanding game and the guys did unbelievably well to knock over the number one side in the world. It was nice to see what this Scottish team can really provide.’ Scotland narrowly missed out on qualification for next year’s World Cup when rain interrupted their final match against West Indies in Harare in March.
But Scottish all-rounder Safyaan Sharif said this win would go some way to making up for that disappointment, adding: ‘England are a brilliant side, everyone knows that. It means the world to Scotland.’
