Guess baby’s weight!

-

aFter Zara tindall gave birth to a 9lb 3oz daughter, it was asked why babies are getting bigger (Mail). the weight of my two children beats all those mentioned.

When my daughter was born 55 years ago, I was attended by four doctors and several midwives. they weren’t so much interested in me, but had run a book to guess the baby’s weight because I was so huge.

Lucy weighed in at 11lb. My husband then arrived, late as usual, with a magnum of champagne (which resulted in one of the doctors having to spend the night at the hospital and a midwife falling off her bike).

When feeding time came, Lucy latched on. Being married to a naval pilot, I could only compare it to

in-flight refuelling. Ouch! Our son was born two years later, weighing just under 11lb. I weighed only 8st 4lb in those days and no one could explain why I gave birth to two such large babies.
