Just the ticket: Graduate wins job after rush hour CV stunt
AFTER gaining only a third-class degree, Kamran Hussain knew he would have to do something special to outshine other graduates.
The 21-year-old accounting and finance student had fired off 100 online job applications without getting a single reply.
But he has now secured work with a marketing firm – after a rush-hour stunt that saw him handing out his CV to passing commuters.
Mr Hussain, from Walthamstow, northeast London, will graduate from the University of Kent tomorrow – and start as a transaction executive for Konica Minolta Marketing Services on the same day. ‘I knew I had to up my game to succeed against first-class graduates,’ he said. ‘My gamble paid off. It almost makes me want to cry. It’s been the best experience of my life. This company has now given me my break and I couldn’t be more thankful.’
Last Tuesday, Mr Hussain printed off 35 CVs and headed to London’s Liverpool Street station at rush hour with a sign that read: ‘Aspiring accountant. Looking for entry level job. Ask for CV.’
He then moved on to nearby Cannon Street and, after four hours, had only four CVs left. The interview offers were soon rolling in and he met with KMMS two days later.
Mr Hussain advises fellow job-seekers to ‘try something innovative’ to gain the edge in a competitive job market. ‘Nowadays you need to do something that makes you stand out,’ he said.
