BETTER LATTE THAN NEVER

I popped into a coffee bar — One of the High Street chains And wondered what to order By its fancy name. I looked at the coffee choice About ten were on the list, So choosing as quickly as I could — I am sure there were some I missed! The barista stood impatiently As I chose the rightsized cup, She then went into full flow Frothing and whizzing up. The sound went from noisy To a sonic boom Which echoed loudly all around The empty tiled room. The machine then hissed and gurgled Overseen by my sweating host, And in the time it took to make I’d have cooked a Sunday roast. Now I’m not complaining, In fact, I never fuss, But before the barista turned around I had to run for my bus. I stepped from the bus so thirsty That I popped to the old church hall Now desperate to drink anything — Anything at all! The sweetest lady stepped forward Putting knitted charity square down And poured me a coffee — The finest cup in town! Sheila Webb, Chesham, Bucks.
