Worboys quizzed over new sex assault claims
BLACK cab rapist John Worboys has been quizzed over a series of new sex attack claims which could scupper any imminent release from prison.
Officers from Scotland Yard have interviewed the notorious sex offender under caution after a number of women came forward to accuse him of assault.
The fresh investigation comes just months after the Parole Board’s decision to release him caused uproar. The 61-year-old, pictured, was jailed indefinitely in 2009 for drugging and assaulting 12 female passengers.
In January the Parole Board decided he no longer posed a threat – however the decision to free him was later overturned at the High Court. His case will now go before a fresh panel.
Since the outcry, five women are said to have gone to police with new allegations against the taxi driver. A further two are said to have asked police to reconsider their claims against him.
Yesterday it emerged that police are liaising with the Crown Prosecution Service. Worboys was interviewed in Wakefield prison on July 4.
The development has raised hopes that his release will be delayed indefinitely as he could be locked up again if convicted of any offence. It is thought that he will remain in custody while the allegations are fully investigated.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: ‘Detectives investigating a number of allegations of non-recent sexual assault have interviewed a 61-year-old man under caution.’
Richard Scorer, who represented 11 of Worboys’ victims, said: ‘This is a welcome development for our clients and all of Worboys’ victims.’
