Heart attack on speeding course? That’s no excuse
A GRANDFATHER who had a heart attack during a driving awareness course was threatened with prosecution by police for failing to finish it.
David Williams, 78, pictured, was attending the event after he was caught driving through a red light.
During the course he passed out and suffered a heart attack. He was taken to hospital for open heart surgery and put in a coma.
Course organisers TTC and Avon and Somerset police sent him threatening letters and would not back down – even after Mr Williams’ granddaughter Amanda Lewis sent them a sick note.
He was given 14 days to pay a £100 fine and accept three penalty points, or face a court hearing – even though his life was hanging in the balance.
Miss Lewis said: ‘I think it’s just appalling. He attended the course – he just didn’t complete it because he had a heart attack. Surely they understand that?’
Mr Williams, of Bristol, is still being treated in hospital. Police have since withdrawn the threat of prosecution.
A spokesman said they had spoken with the family and ‘resolved their concerns’.
