MORE than 40,000 people called HM Revenue & Customs’ tax evasion hotline in 2017/2018 — twice as many in the previous year. A freedom of informatio­n request revealed that the taxman had paid out £343,500 in rewards to informants. HMRC was unable to say how much tax had been recovered as a direct result of the calls.
