Spurs in deadlock with Eriksen over new deal

- By STEVE STAMMERS

TOTTENHAM have reached stalemate in their bid to secure Christian Eriksen on a new contract. The 26-year-old Denmark midfielder has less than two years left on his current deal and Spurs are anxious to secure the long-term future of the man they signed for £11million from Ajax in 2013. Talks have been going on for the last six months but no agreement is in sight because Eriksen wants to be paid on a par with striker Harry Kane and World Cup winning goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. Kane has already signed a new contract which could be worth about £300,000 a week with bonuses. And Lloris has also benefited from a pay rise triggered by him entering the third year of a contract signed two years ago. Eriksen has played 82 times for Denmark and has been tracked by Real Madrid and Barcelona. The danger for Spurs is that if no new deal is signed, Eriksen will be one year away from a free transfer at the end of this season. Eriksen (below), who has achieved iconic status with Spurs fans, knows the best years of his career are yet to come, which puts him in a strong bargaining position. He is a key man for manager Mauricio Pochettino in his attempt to bring silverware to the club. And Eriksen is unlikely to budge unless he is rewarded in a way he believes reflects his contribution and status at Spurs.
