Manhunt after mum and daughter knifed to death

Neighbours heard screams – but thought it was foxes

A MOTHER and daughter were stabbed to death in a frenzied attack outside their home yesterday morning.

Neighbours in the quiet suburban street initially thought their screams of terror in the early hours were the sound of foxes.

Last night police were hunting Janbaz Tarin, 21, for the murders of his former girlfriend Raneem Oudeh, 22, and her mother, Khaola Saleem, 49.

The women were pronounced dead after the attack in the front garden of their home in Solihull, West Midlands.

Yesterday, two blue tents were erected over their bodies, just feet from Mrs Sal- eem’s front door. Detectives warned that Tarin was still at large – and said anyone shielding him ‘ through a sense of misguided loyalty’ would be prosecuted.

The women were originally from Syria but have lived in the UK for at least 16 years. Miss Oudeh, who has a child, was a student at Solihull College.

It is not known when she separated from Tarin, but in December she posted a message on Facebook about walking away from a relationship. It read: ‘A strong woman will automatically stop trying if she feels unwanted. She won’t fix it or beg, she’ll just walk away.’

Tarin, who is originally from Afghanistan according to his Facebook account, is understood to have worked in a corner shop.

Last night the women’s family said: ‘ Our family is devastated with the loss of our loved ones.

‘We would like to give thanks for all the love and support we have received.’ Residents in the previously quiet street told of their shock at the horrific attack.

One neighbour said she heard screaming and shouting before emergency services were called at around 12.30am yesterday.

The woman, who did not want to be named, said: ‘I thought it was foxes screaming. She was absolutely screaming her head off.’

She added of the attacker: ‘He wasn’t speaking English.

‘There was a lot of screaming and shouting and then I saw the guy run off. About a minute later I saw him leave in a van.’

Another neighbour said he had been woken by screaming but assumed it was people coming home from a night out. The fatherof-two said: ‘Then police knocked on my door and asked for some towels, so I knew it was serious.’

Wendy Brown, 76, who lives nearby with her husband, said: ‘We have lived in this home for 40 years ... Nothing like this has ever happened before. It is terrifying.’ One neighbour said they had seen a man visiting the property in a white van, only to crouch down behind it as if he were hiding.

‘The daughter did not always live there. She used to come and go – she has a little girl about 15 months old,’ they said.

‘There has been a man in a Thifty van knocking about a couple of times. On one occasion he came in a rental van.

‘Me and my husband thought it was strange that when he got outside he crouched down so as not to be seen outside the house.’

Wendy Baker only knew Miss Oudeh and Mrs Saleem to say ‘hello’ but said they seemed ‘very nice and friendly’. She added that there were ‘always lots of comings and goings’.

Detective Inspector Caroline Corfield of West Midlands Police said: ‘We’ve been working flat out to apprehend Tarin since the early hours of this morning, following up a number of lines of enquiry.

‘I’m now asking for the public’s help in tracing him. If anyone knows where he is or thinks they may have seen him, I’d urge them to ring 999 immediately.’

She warned that anyone shielding Tarin will be prosecuted. West Midlands Police said it had referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct because it has had previous contact with the victims’ family.
