NO WAY THIS UNITED SIDE CAN CHALLENGE FOR TITLE

- CHRIS SUTTON

WHERE do the problems lie with United? It starts with the manager. This isn’t a pub team. This is Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world. But they can’t defend with a back four and they can’t defend with a back three. United’s attitude looked right in the first half, far different to the performance that the players put in at Brighton last weekend. It is early days, given we are only three league games into the season, but what we’ve seen of United tells us they are not title contenders. Absolutely not. They should have scored first and that could have changed the game. Danny Rose’s short back pass was a gift and Romelu Lukaku got to the ball before Hugo Lloris. He’s left the Tottenham goalkeeper on the floor behind him, it was an absolute gimme. That should have been Manchester United 1, Tottenham 0. Some will say it was on his wrong foot — he hit it with his right when he prefers his left. At this level, you have to take those opportunities, no matter what. While he missed, Harry Kane scored and Spurs grew from there. It was a big difference in a big result.
