Ham sarnie? We prefer hummus and falafel

- By Fionn Hargreaves

THE sandwich never seems to go out of fashion.

Even with the advent of alternatives such as takeaway salads or pastas, the average Briton is getting through some five sandwiches a week.

But it’s a different story when it comes to what we put inside them.

Basics such as ham and cheese are still finding their way into plenty of the snacks but, decade by decade, our favourite fillings are changing.

Since 2010, our best-loved sandwiches have included hummus and falafel, chicken and avocado, and brie and grape. The way the choices have evolved over the last five decades reflect the many new international, vegetarian and exotic options that are available. Ham salad was the most popular sandwich of the 1970s but in the 1980s it was replaced by the slightly healthier chicken salad.

The BLT, which appeared in the 1980s, topped the list in the 1990s, but smoked salmon and cream cheese took its place in the noughties.

Some of the changes could be explained by a generational divide, because almost half of those polled in the research by bread makers Warburtons said they are more adventurous than their parents.

Darren Littler of Warburtons said: ‘With a vastly increased number of choices compared to years gone by, more adventurous fillings are now clearly the order of the day.’
