New designs on a future in graphics

- LW

GRAPHIC designers are in high demand as firms rebrand, revamp and expand online profiles.

Indeed.co.uk has more than 2,000 vacancies for graphic designers, including many for juniors.

Ashleigh Vinall, head of design at Waitrose & Partners, says: ‘Book and album cover design inspired me to a graphic design career.’

After a graphic design degree and a masters in design from Central Saint Martins (now part of the University of the Arts, London), Ashleigh, 54, has worked in design and creative management roles for 30 years, mainly in retail.

Ashleigh says: ‘I love the variety. I develop the creative direction and strategy of our visual brand and see it implemented across visual merchandising, marketing communications, advertising, publications and store design.

‘I also manage an inhouse design team working with agencies and publishers.’

She advises others who are seeking a graphic design career: ‘ It is hugely competitive, so resilience and drive are key. Be proactive — get the right qualifications, network and get a mentor in the industry.’

Martin George, customer director at Waitrose & Partners, says: ‘As well as creative talent, I look for graphic designers who can communicate the personality and values of our business in a fresh way. They must understand how customers respond to our brand.’

Recruiter Nikky Lyle, from Nurture Creatives, which specialises in jobs for graphic designers, says: ‘There is constant demand for graphic designers in print, digital, marketing, branding and social media.

‘Typically you will need a design qualification, and experience as an intern is a bonus, but not essential.’

Salaries start at £18,000 for junior graphic designers and rise to £50,000 for seniors.
