Unhurried escapes

-

FEWER crowds, colourful changes to our leafy landscape and cosy pubs with crackling log fires make the coming autumn months the perfect time to get out and explore.

The frenzy of summer is giving way to the season of mellow fruitfulness, when Britain takes on a golden glow, ideal for visiting food festivals, stately homes and dining out while watching colourstreaked sunsets.

And, best of all, the cost of taking a break tumbles as the leaves start to turn, making this a good time to treat yourself to a stay that’s a bit more special. SUMMER tends to linger on longer in Devon and Cornwall, so September and October can be knockout months, with brilliant sunshine warming up the coast and countryside.

Cornwall’s beautiful gardens are ablaze with vibrant flashes of colour from exotic plants, such as Japanese maples, Australian incense bushes and Asian ginger lilies.

It’s such a romantic time of year. So get all loved up as you stroll around the narrow streets of a Cornish fishing village, popping into a seafood eatery for an intimate meal.

Or how about settling down in a toasty warm pub to watch the fishing boats return to harbour at dusk? Track down a cosy coastal bolthole through Coast & Country Cottages.

UNPLUG in Suffolk, where 50 miles of glorious coastline are arched over by big, blue skies. Full of charming villages and medieval towns, it’s also a special spot for foodies.

The characterful Six Bells Country Inn and Restaurant, set on the village green in pretty Bardwell, near Bury St Edmunds, offers peace, tranquillity and great food.

Five National Trust properties and Wicken Fen are in easy reach. Or visit the fascinating Anglo-Saxon burial ground at Sutton Hoo.

Now that the holiday hordes have gone, it’s the perfect time for an unhurried break in the golden light of autumn.
