NEW BOSS KEWELL LOSES COOL AS COUNTY IMPLODE

- TOM FARMERY

ZEROS OF THE WEEK Notts County’s players

Who is really to blame at Notts County? Owner Alan Hardy sacked Kevin Nolan after eight wins in 28 league games and £750,000 spent on players. Hardy lured Harry Kewell from Crawley to try to get County off the bottom of the table. Kewell’s first game on Saturday was a memorable one — a 5-1 defeat at Exeter in which he was sent to the stands. The players clearly aren’t performing and they are to blame.

HERO OF THE WEEK John Sheridan (Carlisle manager)

Carlisle weren’t exactly talked up in pre- season after their 10th place finish last term but they are showing signs of a side building towards promotion with five wins in their last six games. A 2-1 win at Cambridge moved them up to fourth in the league, three points off top spot. Most encouraging for Sheridan is the fact that it was the second match in a row in which his side had come from behind to win.

GOAL OF THE WEEK Danny Mayor for Bury v Grimsby

Three of the four goals Bury put past Grimsby were scrappy but the fourth was wonderful. Mayor ran at Grimsby from the halfway line, cut inside and curled a shot beyond James McKeown for his second of the game.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Gabriele Cioffi, who worked under Gianfranco Zola at Birmingham, was appointed as Crawley boss last week. ‘When someone offers you a job like this it is a great chance for a coach. I don’t need a job. I wanted this job.’

STAT OF THE WEEK

Notts County conceded 21 goals after seven league games for the first time since the inaugural Football League in 1888-89 when they shipped 23.
