Did shamed youth coach abuse him as a teen?

GARY Speed’s widow suggested he may have been a victim of paedophile football coach Barry Bennell.

Speed’s parents have dismissed the idea. But Louise Speed, 48, said discovering a letter revealing his despair at 17 made her wonder if he had an experience he couldn’t talk about. ‘Maybe something happened which he kept to himself,’ she told the Daily Mirror.

At Bennell’s trial this year, it emerged that Speed was one of four boys he coached who took their own lives.

The 64-year-old admitted Speed stayed at his house in his teens, but denied abusing him. However, another victim said he was ‘99.9 per cent’ certain that was a lie.

Bennell was jailed for 31 years in February for serial abuse – his fourth conviction.
