For sale, AA membership card Lord Lucan left behind

- Daily Mail Reporter

AN AA membership card which Lord Lucan left at the scene of the crime which led to his disappearance has been unearthed.

The card, bearing the aristocrat’s signature and photograph, pictured left, was found at the family home in London’s Belgravia where he bludgeoned his children’s nanny Sandra Rivett to death.

Lucan, whose family name was Bingham, vanished in November 1974 and his car found abandoned 75 miles away in Newhaven, East Sussex. He was never seen again and is widely thought to have committed suicide.

His wife Lady Lucan – believed to be his intended target of his attack – died a year ago at the Belgravia home she had continued to live in. The three-inch by four-inch AA card is now coming up for auction, among a number of items first sold as part of his estate 40 years ago. It is expected to fetch around £800.

Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said in Devizes, Wiltshire: ‘The card is not dated but judging by the photo of him it was taken not long before he disappeared. In those days, motorists always took their AA or RAC cards with them. Obviously he did not take his on this last occasion.’
