Follow-up

I HAD a similar experience to the reader whose grandson asked how to plug in a toasting fork (Peterborough). While browsing in a secondhand shop in Sheringham, I observed a young couple examining a Sixties-style kettle with interest. She asked her companion: ‘What do you suppose this was used for?’ He replied: ‘I have no idea, darling.’ Unable to resist helping out, I said it was a kettle, whereupon the young lady gave me a rather pitying look and said kindly: ‘No, my dear, it couldn’t have been a kettle — there is nowhere to put a plug.’ Miss Doreen Clarke,
