‘But, on average, most women ovulate within one month of stopping the Pill, then have the same chance of pregnancy as any other woman of the same age,’ says Dr Diana Mansour, a consultant in community gynaecology and reproductive health at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust.

‘In the Fifties, an early version of the Pill was used to “rest the ovaries” for a few months in women who found it difficult to conceive, as it was found to increase the chance of conception.’

Most other forms of contraceptive also reverse rapidly. The exception is the contraceptive injection, which may stop ovulation for five to six months.
