- Valerie Southcott Jones, Westbourne, Dorset

Dying vegetation around us now, House foundations full of weeds. No more a place of beauty — Green fingers this garden needs. Once a riot of colour, A home for insects and bees, The soil is dead and empty — Not even birds are in the trees. The house is not abandoned, A family is living there, But in pride of place a trampoline — For a living garden there’s no care. Why such sad abandonment? Why no TLC does this garden get? A very, very sad story — The home is a ‘Buy to Let’. You cannot blame the tenants If the landlord won’t spend money, Hard work and cash to landlord’s purse To a tenant is not funny. Agents have a role to play But little effort on their part Has seen this home deteriorate — Just a ‘terminus’ with no heart. Such homes are not an island Now many litter a street, They compete with the beautiful gardens Where busy owners enjoy a retreat. The moral is far from easy ‘Buy to Let’ has gains for the few. Pity the plight of the wildlife, and I also love flowers — do you? From rubbish, crime, and well-being The councils have a lot on their plate, Neighbours, let’s unite for the good of our land And save our bees before it’s too late.
