Snowflake university

-

THE initiative by Manchester University students to discourage clapping, as it disturbs some people’s sensitivities (and to use ‘jazz hands’ instead), can be added to the growing list of restrictions in our universities.

These include banning speakers who hold controversial views; disregarding historical events and figures (and removing statues of them) because students have decided the wrong they did in the past should not be included in their learning; and ordering that certain books judged to be offensive should not be in university libraries.

There is a need for a new place of learning for these students: Snowflake University (the ultimate ‘safe place’).

D. RIGLEY, Malmesbury, Wilts. NO CLAPPING at Manchester University. let’s be fair, Jose Mourinho has already introduced that at Manchester United. MICHAEL LYNCHEHAUN,

Wallasey, Wirral. I was amused, then cross, when I heard that Manchester Students’ Union has banned clapping (Mail).

In the Bible we are requested to ‘clap your hands, all people’ (psalm 47, verse 1). The cynical part of me thinks that’s the reason for the ban. as for me, I will carry on clapping!

SUE SAXON, Haslingden, lancs.
