Fans gave my tiny telly the red card

-

ON MAY 26, 1989, liverpool were playing Arsenal to decide the First division. At the time, I was the landlord of the Cock Inn, in Woodseaves, staffordshire. A coach full of Arsenal supporters turned up at the pub as their driver had realised that, due to the bank holiday traffic, they were not going to get to liverpool on time. I was asked if I had a Tv and I said I would get a portable one from upstairs. Arsenal achieved their dream, scoring in injury time to secure the league title. one of the fans asked me for a business card, which I gave him. ‘one each,’ he said. ‘What for?’ I replied. ‘They will never believe us back home,’ he said. ‘We’ve got tickets for liverpool v Arsenal and we’ve ended up in a poxy little village, in a poxy little pub and watched the match on a poxy nine-inch black and white.’ despite the football fans’ disappointment at not making it to the match, it was a great night. Good job the local licensing officer was a pub regular!
