Was Gatsby such a great idea?

EUGENIE raised eyebrows by choosing a reading from The Great Gatsby that appeared to liken her new husband’s smile to that of a criminal conman.

Soon after meeting Jack Brooksbank, the princess read F Scott Fitzgerald’s Jazz Age novel – and decided the main character’s enigmatic smile ‘reminded her immediately’ of her new love.

And so yesterday the passage about ‘one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance’ was read by Maid of Honour Princess Beatrice. But it sparked debate because Jay Gatsby is an extravagant millionaire and conman who is ultimately murdered. Some mocked Eugenie on social media, asking if she’d read to the end of the novel.
