Standards to be upheld
LABOUR MP Kate Green is expected to become the new chair of the Commons Committee on Standards, with nominations due to close on Monday. I can think of few MPs less suited to this vitally important job, which is supposed to ensure decent behaviour from MPs. Back in May, she was one of the MPs on the standards committee who voted against a Commons investigation into claims that John Bercow bullied his staff. If Ms Green becomes chair, it will be a disaster for the Commons. It will lead to fears that those accused of misbehaviour will not face the level of scrutiny that’s crucial if the public’s faith in Parliament — shattered by the expenses scandal — is not to crumble once more.
