ALLI HAMSTRING WOES RETURN

- MATT BARLOW

Dele AllI will miss the start of the season with another hamstring injury as problems mount for Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino. Spurs were beaten by Inter Milan on penalties after a 1-1 draw yesterday in their final friendly before their Premier league campaign starts against Aston Villa on Saturday. Alli was absent after suffering a hamstring injury, his third in a year since the World Cup. ‘I don’t believe he’s going to be ready for the start of the season,’ said Pochettino. ‘It’s the same area and we are worried. he’s still so young, just 23, and has many, many hamstring problems in the last few years. ‘he has to pay attention to what is going on in his body, but we are here to try to help him. ‘We think it is a minor injury and only a few weeks before he can be available again and be with the group.’ england boss Gareth Southgate will keep a keen eye on the situation with euro 2020 qualifiers early next month. There are already other fitness issues complicating the manager’s preparations for the Premier league season. Ben Davies, who is recovering from groin surgery, and Serge Aurier, who has had an operation on a hand, are still out. So, too, are Victor Wanyama, eric Dier and Juan Foyth, who suffered an ankle injury against Bayern Munich last week and will be out for ‘many weeks’ according to Pochettino. Aurier, Wanyama and Dier are back in training and worked on their fitness yesterday rather than take part in the game against Inter. Foyth and Son heungmin are both banned for Spurs’ opening two games — against Villa and Manchester City — after red cards against Bournemouth in May.
