Climate campaigners defy Yard’s protest ban

- Daily Mail Reporter

SCOTlAnD Yard is facing a legal fight after banning extinction Rebellion activists from assembling anywhere in london.

The climate campaigners say they will challenge the crackdown in the High Court while continuing to mount protests across the capital.

Yesterday they targeted the Department for Transport in opposition to the HS2 rail link. The group’s cofounder, Dr Gail Bradbrook, 47, was arrested after climbing on top of the ministry’s entrance and trying to smash glass panels with a hammer. She has been accused of hypocrisy after taking a long-haul holiday to Costa Rica three years ago.

Other activists locked themselves to a caravan parked outside Mi5 HQ and erected an art installation outside Tate Modern. extinction Rebellion said it would expand its twoweek long protest to the london Underground, probably tomorrow.

The group had been allowed to gather in Trafalgar Square but was in breach of legal orders by demonstrating in the City and Whitehall. Scotland Yard has imposed conditions under the Public Order Act, meaning any gathering of two or more protesters linked to extinction Rebellion in the capital is now unlawful. Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott said the ban was contrary to the right to protest. Home Secretary Priti Patel said labour support for ‘law breakers’ showed it could not be trusted in power.
