Land of milk and honey

-

WhY are the actions taken on behalf of the nation to try to control illegal entry to the UK criticised so strongly? Do these critics seriously believe we should throw open our borders and let anyone in without checks?

It is wrong to describe many of the people attempting to enter the UK illegally from France as asylum seekers. having left their countries of origin, if they seek asylum for legitimate reasons, they must do so in the first safe country they arrive in.

Instead, they travel through various

safe countries with the sole aim of getting into the UK. In most cases, they pay vast sums to do this. They are, in fact, economic migrants.

Of course we should help genuine refugees, but it is essential for the wellbeing of this country that we do not let woolly-minded thinking cloud the issue.

As for turning Jesus away, having spent decades singing Jerusalem, I thought that matter had been settled! JOSEPH ALEXANDER,

Sheffield.
