Parents face bill for GCSES over absence

Daily Mirror (Northern Ireland) - - SQUARE EYES - BY ADAM ASPINALL

PARENTS face being charged for GCSE exams if their children are absent from too many classes. Colchester Academy secondary in Essex plans to charge £65 per subject for pupils with an attendance below 90%. The threshold, revealed to parents in a letter, is the equivalent of missing 20 days in an academic year. Principal Fiona Pierson said: “Since sending this letter we have seen an improvement in Year 11 attendance of 1.1%. “The number who have an attendance below 90% has decreased by over half.” But she said parents would be exempt if there were medical reasons. Ofsted rated the school as requiring improvement in 2015 and it had been in special measures.
