The man who turned the Oscars into a la-la-laughing stock

THERE was only one nominee for biggest blunder at the Oscars – accountants Pricewaterhousecoopers.

Last night there were calls for heads to roll after PWC bosses handed over the wrong envelopes so La La Land was incorrectly announced as Best Picture instead of Moonlight. Screen legends Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway presented the gong. PWC made a grovelling apology but hundreds took to social media demanding the firm and the people involved are fired. Pwc’s US board chairman Brian Cullinan and tax partner Martha Ruiz, seen on the red carpet with matching cases, were in charge of handing out envelopes containing the winners’ names. Earlier Mr Cullinan had bragged about his leader- ship saying there had “never been a problem” and described their roles as the “coolest job an accountant can have.” He said: “We each hand the respective envelope to the presenter. It doesn’t sound complicated but you have to make sure you’re giving the presenter the right envelope.” Johnathan Pearson wrote on Facebook: “Pwc’s role is untenable. Brought shame on Hollywood’s biggest night of the year. They have to go. They’re toast.” Brandon Mills wrote: “Looks like @Theacademy will be looking for a new auditing firm next year. @ PWC, you’re fired!” Gillian Brockell said: “It’s either Martha or Brian at @PWC_ LLP getting fired.”
