Bid to trace the killer’s journey on fake papers

- BY RUSSELL MYERS Chief Investigative Reporter in Istanbul

SECURITY services are using facial recognition technology to determine whether Salman Abedi crossed international borders using a fake passport. UK intelligence agencies are working with their counterparts in Germany, Turkey and Libya, using biometric data to piece together Abedi’s movements. The latest development follows claims that Abedi went to hospital after fighting in Libya in 2011 and was taken to Turkey for treatment using false documents. This week it emerged that he had flown to Manchester via Istanbul and Düsseldorf just four days before the atrocity, prompting fears he met other members of an international cell. Police are examining CCTV at both airports to see whether he met up with other individuals. Turkish investigators are now examining the movements of Abedi’s father Ramadan and brother Hashem, 20, who were arrested in Libya on Wednesday. Libyan authorities have claimed Hashem was planning a “terrorist act” in Tripoli and was aware of his brother’s evil plot to blow himself up in Manchester.
