ISLAMIC State leader Abu Bakr al-baghdadi has been killed in a Russian air strike, it was claimed yesterday. The Iraqi warlord was allegedly wiped out with scores of other terrorists near the Syrian city of Raqqa, the de-facto capital of IS in the region. The bombing raid is said to have been launched after Russian spies discovered a meeting of terror chiefs was being planned to discuss a retreat. Moscow’s Defence Ministry said: “On May 28, Russian air forces launched a strike on the command point where the leaders were located. According to the information, which is being checked, also present was Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-baghdadi, who was eliminated as a result of the strike.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov added: “More than 100 terrorists were eliminated.” But Iraqi officials claim al-baghdadi, who is in his mid-40s, was not in Raqqa at the time of the strike. The US was informed in advance of the air strike but officials were last night unable to confirm the terror chief ’s death.
