DREAMER DEFOE EYES WORLD CUP

-

JERMAIN DEFOE is dreaming of a place in England’s World Cup squad.

The striker, 34, hopes to bag himself a seat on the plane to Russia and said: “It’s only normal to have one eye on the World Cup. Every English player will want to get in to that squad.

“But it’s based on merit, so you’ll have to play well for your club. I’ll focus on doing that and then, if I get the opportunity to play in the World Cup, it would be a dream.” Defoe (left), recalled to the England set-up in March, made his first outing since joining Bournemouth in Saturday’s 2-1 win at Portsmouth.

The striker faces a fight for his Cherries place and added: “It’s no different to Tottenham.

“There were always four top forwards, who would go away with their national team and England.”
